~ The City of Springfield is facing a setback in their plans for a new regional events and convention center. After voters rejected a proposed 3% increase in the hotel-motel guest license tax, the city is now looking for alternate funding options.

Initially, the city had secured an estimated $60 million in funding for the project. This included $30 million from the state of Missouri and another $30 million from local sales tax revenue dedicated to civic projects.

City Manager David Cameron expressed disappointment at the outcome of the vote, stating that it was a missed opportunity to leverage potential state funding. He emphasized the need to make significant progress on the project by next spring in order to keep those funds on the table.

Despite this setback, Cameron assured that they will continue working towards making the project a reality. He stated that every dollar spent now will help maximize state contributions and minimize local burden in the future. He also stressed on being responsible stewards of this opportunity and ensuring that Springfield benefits fully from available resources.

The proposed events and convention center has been touted as a landmark destination for not just Springfield but also for the entire region. It is expected to bring new opportunities for conventions, concerts, tournaments, and community gatherings that were previously out of reach.
