~ In a proactive move to prioritize her health, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones recently underwent a colonoscopy procedure. This decision comes as the American Cancer Society predicts over 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer this year, with one third of those diagnosed ultimately succumbing to the disease. As the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, early detection and prevention are crucial in reducing these alarming statistics.

A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for screening and has been proven to save lives. According to the National Institutes for Health, adults whose cancer was detected through a screening colonoscopy had significantly higher overall survival rates (over 85%) and colorectal cancer-specific survival rates (over 90%) five years after diagnosis compared to those whose cancer was detected through symptoms or other means.
Mayor Jones' decision to undergo this procedure serves as an important reminder for individuals to prioritize their health and take necessary steps for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer.
