~ In a show of commitment to improving the city's parks and neighborhoods, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones, along with 3rd Ward Alderman Shane Cohn, City staff, and various community organizations and residents, gathered at Marquette Park today for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the newly renovated basketball courts and brand-new pickleball courts.
The event marks the second consecutive week that the City of St. Louis has opened free outdoor sports facilities in one of its parks. Mayor Jones expressed her enthusiasm for providing more opportunities for St. Louisans, especially children, to engage in physical activity and have fun in one of the city's 108 parks.
Funded by the Biden-Harris administration's American Rescue Plan Act, the upgrades to the basketball courts and construction of pickleball courts are just one step in the City's larger effort to revitalize Marquette Park, Dutchtown, and south St. Louis.

Under Mayor Jones' administration, over $5 million is being invested in neighborhood transformation around Marquette Park. This includes $325,000 for beautification projects at the park and vacant properties on Virginia and Alabama avenues, $800,000 for a new artistic fence at the Marquette Park pool as part of a Neighborhood Plan Implementation project, $1.375 million for rehabilitating six vacant buildings near the park to create more than 50 affordable homes, and $2.9 million for a new Family Care health clinic on Grand Boulevard.
In addition to these initiatives, the City is also currently redesigning 7.8 miles of Grand Boulevard to improve safety for all users and undertaking phase two of the Louisiana Calm Streets project which will extend from Meramec Street to Carondelet Park. These efforts aim to make it safer and more enjoyable for residents to travel through south St. Louis by car, bike or foot.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony at Marquette Park serves as a symbol of the City's commitment to creating a stronger, safer, and healthier community for all its residents. With ongoing investments and improvements, it is clear that Mayor Jones and her administration are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in St. Louis.
