~ Construction on the Walnut Street Bridge over Jordan Creek, located east of Kansas Expressway, is set to begin on March 3. According to MoDOT condition inspections, the aging bridge is in need of replacement for safety and traffic flow improvements. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
The construction will take place in two phases. The first phase will involve preliminary work and will require a one-week closure of the bridge before it reopens temporarily. The second phase, which is set to begin in early April, will involve a full closure of the bridge for the duration of the project.
Aside from replacing the aging structure, the project also includes plans for a multi-use path on and beneath the bridge. This will not only enhance future trail connectivity but also improve creek flood capacity. This addition aligns with Springfield's growing trail network and provides a crucial link for future connections.

During construction, detours will be in place to help drivers navigate around the work zone using College Street, Grant Avenue, and Mt. Vernon Street. The estimated cost for this project is $3.2 million and is funded 80% through Off-System Bridge (BRO) Program funding. The remaining 20% comes from the local match for construction through the ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax, while the design phase was primarily funded by the 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax.
Julie Hawkins, Public Works Project Manager, expresses appreciation for everyone's patience during this project and emphasizes its importance as a vital connection into West Central Neighborhood and Downtown Springfield. "This project not only replaces an aging structure but also helps lay the groundwork for a more connected Springfield," says Hawkins.
Residents are advised to plan ahead for potential delays during construction and to follow detour routes as directed. With safety improvements and enhanced trail connectivity in store, this project promises to benefit both drivers and pedestrians alike upon its completion this fall.
