~ Springfield, MO - On July 24, approximately 80 volunteers joined forces with the Springfield Public Works crews to assist with storm debris cleanup in response to the recent severe weather. The Clean Green Storm Debris Volunteer Day saw volunteers working at three different locations - Zagonyi Park, Fassnight Park, and Sunset Church of Christ - to help clear nearly 400 properties in need of assistance.

Under the supervision of Public Works, these dedicated volunteers logged an estimated 320 hours of work, moving debris to the curb in preparation for upcoming pickup sweeps. The efforts were focused on areas with the highest number of assistance requests - Zones 1 and 3.

"We are grateful for all the volunteers who gave their time today to work alongside us. This was truly a community effort and their extra hands made a huge impact," said Eric Claussen, Assistant Director of Public Works. "We are pleased with the progress we have made together and proud of our work groups for their dedication."

It is important to note that the Volunteer Day activities were separate from the Public Works debris pickup schedule. The neighborhood debris sweeps will continue over the next week according to the following tentative schedule: Zone 1 from August 11-15, Zone 3 from August 18-22, Zone 2 from August 25-29, and Zone 4 from September 1-5.

Residents do not need to register for these sweeps or debris pickups. They are simply asked to ensure that only natural/organic vegetative debris such as limbs, branches, and brush is placed at the curb or nearest accessible location without blocking sidewalks, driveways or drainage ditches prior to their City Council Zone's scheduled dates.

This ongoing effort is part of the City's response to the severe storms that hit on April 29 and June 29, causing widespread tree damage and infrastructure impacts throughout Springfield.
