Springfield, Mo. ~ Springfield, Mo. - On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Springfield Police Department (SPD) mourned the loss of retired K9 officer Charlie, who passed away at the age of 12 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Charlie had faithfully served alongside his handler, Sgt. Michael Karnes, for six years before retiring in 2020.
Originally from Denmark, Charlie joined the SPD in June 2014 and quickly became a model K9 officer. He was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and excelled in tasks such as tracking suspects, searching buildings, conducting car sniffs, and finding articles.

Sgt. Karnes fondly remembers Charlie as a hardworking and intelligent partner who always gave his best effort. "My favorite thing about Charlie was his work ethic and I will miss him," said Karnes. "He was methodical and I always knew he would give his all. He was the best partner I have ever had."
Even in retirement, Charlie remained a beloved member of Karnes' family and enjoyed spending time relaxing and playing outside in their yard. The bond between them was indescribable to anyone who wasn't a K9 handler.
The SPD community is deeply saddened by the loss of K9 Charlie but will always remember him as a dedicated officer and loyal companion to Sgt. Karnes.
