Springfield, Mo. ~ Springfield Police Department Promotes First Female Captain
The Springfield Police Department has announced the promotion of Lt. Annesha Umbarger to the rank of Captain, making her the first female in the department's history to achieve this distinguished position. With 17 years of dedicated service to the community, Umbarger has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment.
In her new role, Captain Umbarger will oversee south Springfield patrol operations in the Uniform Operations Bureau, which includes seven patrol squads and the city-wide traffic unit. This promotion is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and integrity, according to Chief Paul Williams.
"Capt. Umbarger has not only proven herself as a capable and dedicated leader but also serves as a role model for current officers and future generations," Chief Williams stated. "Her promotion is well-deserved and reflects her commitment to serving our community."

Umbarger began her career with the Springfield Police Department in 2007 as part of the 57th police academy. Throughout her time with the department, she has served on patrol and taken on specialized assignments in units such as Financial Crimes, Special Victims, and Child Crimes/Cybercrimes. In 2021, she was promoted to Lieutenant where she continued to lead as a patrol commander before overseeing the Property Crimes Section until her recent promotion to captain.
In addition to her law enforcement career, Umbarger also served in the military for 13 years. She holds both a master's and bachelor's degree in criminology with a minor in psychology from Missouri State University.
