~ Springfield Police are currently investigating a possible murder/suicide that occurred on W. Walnut Street on May 18, 2019. According to a press release from the department, officers received a call at 2:52 p.m. regarding the wellbeing of individuals at 632 W. Walnut, Apartment B.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a male suspect who refused to exit the apartment. Despite attempts to negotiate with him, the suspect refused to communicate with officers or leave the premises. As a result, Special Response Team Officers were called in and entered the apartment.
Inside, they discovered two deceased individuals who appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Jacqueline L. Steinert, 52, and Matthew T. Stephens, 53, both residents of Springfield. Next-of-kin notifications have been made for both individuals.

At this time, investigators do not believe there is a suspect at large and have assured the community that there is no danger to their safety. However, detectives are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers.
The department can be reached at 417-864-1810 while Crime Stoppers can be contacted at 417-869-TIPS (8477). As more details emerge from this tragic event, authorities will provide updates to the public.
