~ SPRINGFIELD, MO- An attempted rape on the campus of Missouri State University has sparked an investigation by the Springfield Police Department (SPD). The incident occurred on May 23, 2019 at approximately 10:39 a.m. in Cheek Hall, located at 825 S. National.

According to a statement released by the SPD, a 911 caller reported being assaulted by an unknown white male suspect in the women's bathroom of Cheek Hall. The victim, an employee of MSU, had entered the bathroom when she was suddenly grabbed by the suspect as she exited a stall. The victim was able to fight off the suspect and escape from the bathroom. The suspect also fled from the scene and ran out of Cheek Hall.

The victim immediately called 911 and campus safety officers from MSU were able to apprehend the suspect until SPD officers arrived. The suspect was identified as Gregory E. Morton Jr., a 32-year-old registered sex offender from Springfield. Morton is also suspected in several other crimes currently being investigated by SPD.

The Greene County Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against Morton for first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, and first-degree attempted rape with no bond set. Detectives are continuing to investigate this incident and are urging anyone with information to contact SPD at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).
