Springfield, Mo. ~ Springfield Police Department to Graduate 12 Recruits from 80th Police Academy

On Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., the Springfield Police Department will hold a graduation ceremony for 12 police recruits from the 80th Police Academy. The event will take place at Parkcrest Baptist Church located at 816 W. Republic Rd.

The rigorous Springfield Police Academy consists of 1,074 hours of intense law enforcement training over a period of 27 weeks. This class of recruits began their training in June and will now move on to the next phase of their journey as police officers.

After graduation, the new officers will be assigned to an experienced field-training officer (FTO) for an additional 640 hours of on-the-job training over a period of 16 weeks. Once they complete this program, they will be assigned to solo patrol duties in the Uniform Operations Bureau.

The graduates of the 80th academy include eleven men and one woman with diverse educational backgrounds and work experience. Some have backgrounds in military, medical, social services, retail, construction, corrections, and police dispatch.

The ceremony will be livestreamed on CityView and on the Springfield Police Department's Facebook page starting at 7 p.m. for those who are unable to attend in person.

In addition to the recruits graduating from the academy, one lateral police officer and one fire marshal graduated from the 24th Lateral Police Academy on Dec.1. The lateral officer brings over nine years of experience with the Joplin Police Department to SPD.

A lateral officer is an experienced officer who has come from another law enforcement agency. The lateral academy is a shortened paid training program specifically designed for experienced officers and includes six weeks (240 hours) of in-house training to familiarize them with Springfield and the Springfield Police Department. After graduation, these officers will also undergo six weeks of on-the-job training with an FTO before being assigned to solo patrol duties in the Uniform Operations Bureau.
