~ At approximately 8:15 a.m., the Springfield Fire Department was called to respond to a house fire on South New Avenue. According to reports, black smoke could be seen coming from the windows of the home. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke conditions and immediately began search-and-rescue operations.

During their search, firefighters were able to locate one victim still inside the home. The individual was quickly transported to Mercy Hospital by EMS, where they are currently listed in critical but stable condition. It was later discovered that the home did not have any working smoke alarms.
