~ On May 30, a tragic house fire in the 800 block of South Delaware Avenue claimed the life of a 54-year-old man. James Snetselaar was rescued by Springfield firefighters but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on June 6. The victim was found on the second floor of the home and was immediately provided with care by firefighters and EMS before being transported to Mercy Hospital.

In addition to Mr. Snetselaar, an adult female was also rescued from the first floor of the home. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation and later released. The Springfield Fire Department received reports of smoke coming from the eaves of the home around 1:20 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a fire on the second floor which was contained to the home.

According to officials, there were no working smoke alarms in the house at the time of the fire. The cause is still under investigation but is believed to be accidental. This marks the third fire fatality in Springfield this year, highlighting the importance of having functioning smoke alarms in every home.
