~ Springfield Police Department Conducts Crosswalk Yield Check at New HAWK Signal
The Springfield Police Department will be conducting a Crosswalk Yield Check at the intersection of Glenstone Ave and Division Street, near Evangel University, during the week of April 22. This check is part of an effort to ensure driver compliance with the new pedestrian signal that was recently installed by MoDOT.
The High Intensity Activated CrossWalk (HAWK) signal is the third of its kind in Springfield and allows pedestrians to safely cross major roadways. When not in use by a pedestrian, the signal remains dark and does not interrupt traffic flow. However, when activated by a pedestrian, drivers are required to stop when the solid red lights are displayed. If the red lights are flashing and the pedestrian has cleared the crosswalk, drivers may proceed.
To educate the public on this new type of signal, the City of Springfield has developed an educational flyer and a public service announcement (PSA). The goal is to ensure that both drivers and pedestrians understand how to properly use this signal for everyone's safety.

During the Crosswalk Yield Check, one officer in plain clothing will act as a pedestrian, while another officer will serve as a spotter. A third officer will be in a patrol vehicle nearby, ready to stop any drivers who do not properly yield to the pedestrian. Signs will be posted in advance to alert drivers that they are approaching a Yield Check location.
For the first four weeks of this initiative, officers will only issue warnings for failure to yield. However, citations may be given if necessary. Officers may also address any pedestrians who do not follow regulations and provide education on safe crossing practices.
Funded through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation, these Crosswalk Yield Checks are conducted through a partnership between the Springfield Police Department and SGF Yields - a pedestrian safety program administered by Springfield Public Works.

The Springfield Police Department urges all drivers and pedestrians to be aware of and follow the regulations for this new HAWK signal to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
