~ As National Pedestrian Safety Month approaches, the City of Springfield and its SGF Yields pedestrian safety program are teaming up with various neighborhoods to host a Lantern Walk event on Saturday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m. This event aims to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and encourage families to participate in a fun and educational activity.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration have designated October as National Pedestrian Safety Month. In response, Springfield has been holding annual Lantern Walks since 2021 to draw attention to the most vulnerable road users in a creative way.
This year's Lantern Walks will take place in five different neighborhoods: Rountree, Delaware, West Central, Galloway Village, Brentwood, and along Commercial Street hosted by Woodland Heights and Robberson neighborhoods. The City of Springfield partners with these neighborhoods through its pedestrian safety program SGF Yields to organize the event.

Residents are encouraged to build and decorate luminaries ahead of the walk. At sunset on October 5th, participants will stroll along a designated one-mile route with their illuminated lanterns. Along the way, there will be multiple stations where children can learn safe walking tips while drivers will be educated on crosswalk safety. Parents are also encouraged to practice safe street crossings with their children during the walk.
To make the autumn walk even more beautiful, residents along the route can decorate their porches and sidewalks with lights and applaud the children for their lanterns. Those interested in crafting their own lanterns can attend a free workshop at the Creamery Art Center on October 4th from 5-7 p.m.
