~ As the cleanup efforts continue in Springfield following the April 29 and June 29 storms, residents in Zone 2 are reminded to move their storm debris to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, August 25. This is in preparation for a zone-wide Public Works pickup sweep that is scheduled to take place from August 25-29. Debris pickup in Zones 1 and 3 will also continue through August 29.
According to Springfield Public Works, a total of 11,807 cubic yards of debris have been collected from Zones 1 and 3 since the sweeps began on August 11. However, there is still more work to be done as crews have only collected debris from approximately 77% of Zone 1 and about 57% of Zone 3.
Eric Claussen, Assistant Director of Public Works, acknowledges that collecting such a large volume of debris is a monumental undertaking. He explains that it is taking longer than expected due to the continuous growth of debris piles. Claussen urges residents to have all their debris moved to the curbline by the first day of their scheduled pickup week in order to make it easier for crews to assess equipment and crew needs.
Residents do not need to register for debris pickup but are asked to ensure that only organic debris such as limbs, branches, and brush are placed at the streetside without blocking sidewalks, driveways or drainage ditches prior to their City Council Zone's scheduled dates.
