~ Residents of Springfield Zone 1 are being reminded to prepare for a zone-wide Public Works pickup sweep scheduled for August 11-15. In order to participate, residents are asked to move any storm debris to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, August 11.

According to Public Works Assistant Director Eric Claussen, this effort is part of the city's ongoing response to the April 29 and June 29 storms that caused significant damage throughout Springfield. The city has already responded to nearly 400 requests for assistance in moving debris and is now focusing on Zone 1, which was hit the hardest and has been waiting the longest for cleanup.

Residents do not need to register for debris pickup and are only asked to make sure that organic debris such as limbs, branches, and brush is placed at the curb or nearest accessible location without blocking sidewalks, driveways, or drainage ditches. The pickup sweeps will follow a tentative schedule with Zone 1 being serviced first from August 11-15, followed by Zone 3 from August 18-22, Zone 2 from August 25-29, and finally Zone 4 from September 1-5. However, Claussen notes that due to the amount of debris in Zone 1, it may take longer than a week to complete the cleanup. The city will keep residents updated on their progress and timeline.

In addition to Public Works crews, a contracted tree company is also assisting with larger trees and debris on properties. This service is provided free of charge to citizens. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Citizen Resource Center at (417)864-1010.

It is important for residents to note that only natural and organic vegetative debris will be collected during this pickup sweep. Any other types of debris will not be accepted. Debris must also be ready by 7 a.m. on the first day of their City Council Zone's scheduled pickup week.
