~ Springfield Public Works has announced that the storm debris pickup in Zone 1 is almost complete, with only a small number of residences left to sweep. According to the department, residents in Zone 1 who still have storm debris piles at the curb since August 11 are urged to call the Citizen Resource Center at 864-1010 to report it.

Since the sweeps began on August 11, an estimated 18,364 cubic tons of debris have been collected. Public Works has reported that approximately 70% of Zone 3's debris has been picked up, while the City's tree management contractor has addressed about 5% of Zone 2.

The next phase of debris pickup will begin in Zone 4 on Tuesday, September 2 due to the upcoming Labor Day holiday. Residents in this zone are reminded to move all storm debris to the street by 7 a.m. in preparation for pickup.

It is important for residents to note that they do not need to register for debris pickup. They are simply asked to ensure that only organic debris is moved to the streetside and that it does not block sidewalks, driveways or drainage ditches prior to their City Council Zone's scheduled dates.

In addition, a City-contracted tree company is currently addressing properties with larger trees and debris and may assist with curbside pickup in certain areas. This service is provided free of charge to citizens. Any questions or concerns can be directed to 864-1010.

Eric Claussen, Assistant Director of Public Works, stated that their priority at this stage is completing the Zone-wide sweeps of brush and debris moved to the street. Once this is done, the tree management contractor will shift their focus to addressing larger trees and limbs.

Residents who want debris removed in August and September are reminded of the following important notes:

- Only natural/organic vegetative debris will be collected, such as limbs, branches, and brush.

- No registration is required for pickup.

- Debris should be placed at the curb or nearest accessible location, without blocking sidewalks, driveways or drainage ditches.

- Debris must be ready by 7 a.m. on the first day of their City Council Zone's scheduled pickup week.

This effort is part of the City's ongoing response to the April 29 and June 29 storms, which caused significant tree damage and infrastructure impacts throughout Springfield. The Public Works department is working diligently to ensure that all storm debris is properly collected and disposed of in a timely manner.
