~ Springfield Police have released the name of the suspect who died in their custody on April 1, 2019. According to authorities, 32-year-old Wally A. McCurdy from Springfield was apprehended by officers after attempting to shoplift at Walmart on E. Kearney.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:34 P.M., when police responded to a call about a shoplifting suspect fleeing the scene. After being taken into custody, officers noticed that McCurdy had stopped breathing and immediately performed life-saving measures. He was then transported to Mercy Hospital where he later passed away.

Next-of-kin notifications have been made for McCurdy and an autopsy will be conducted by the Greene County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death. Detectives are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers.
