~ Springfield Police responded to a public demonstration that turned violent on Friday, May 31, 2019 in Park Central Square. The demonstration, which was organized through Facebook, saw the presence of both protesters and counter-protesters. Tensions between the two groups escalated and resulted in a disturbance that turned violent.
According to officials, the police had been monitoring the demonstration and intervened when things got out of hand. While attempting to make an arrest, multiple individuals assaulted the officers. As a result, five arrests were made.
The authorities have stated that they will review video footage of the event to determine if any additional charges are warranted. Among those arrested were Colin A. Douglas, a 34-year-old white male who was charged with 4th-degree assault and resisting arrest; Lateya C. King, an 18-year-old black female who was charged with 4th-degree assault special victims (LEO) and resisting arrest; Jacob D. Clark-Browning, a 20-year-old white male who was charged with 4th-degree assault special victims (LEO) and resisting arrest; Christopher Prather, a 30-year-old white male who was charged with 4th-degree assault special victims (LEO) and resisting arrest; and Brady Markgraf, a 19-year-old white male who was charged with 4th-degree assault special victims (LEO) and resisting arrest.

The Springfield Police Department and the City of Springfield have expressed their support for the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. They have also reminded citizens that the downtown square is a public place where individuals can freely express their opinions without needing a permit.
Police Chief Paul Williams emphasized the importance of mutual respect for everyone's right to free speech and urged participants to remain civil and nonviolent in expressing their views. He also reassured that police will be present at such events to ensure the safety of all involved but will only intervene when necessary.
