~ Springfield Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting on W. Division
On April 9, 2019, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Springfield police officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of W. Division Street to check on the wellbeing of an unresponsive male who was sitting in a van. Upon arrival, officers found the described male subject in the van and proceeded to make contact with him.
During their investigation, officers discovered that the van was reported stolen. They then advised the subject to step out of the vehicle, but instead of complying, the subject suddenly drove away, dragging one officer alongside the vehicle. In response, a second back-up officer fired their duty weapon and struck the suspect.

The first officer was able to free themselves from the vehicle and sustained minor injuries during the incident. The male suspect fled the scene in the stolen vehicle and was later spotted by an officer near Jefferson and Calhoon intersection. The suspect then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by officers after a short pursuit.
The suspect was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where they are currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Detectives are continuing their investigation into this officer-involved shooting and are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).
