~ Springfield Police Captain Honored as Big of the Year
On March 27, 2019, the Springfield Police Department proudly announced that one of their own, Captain Tad Peters, had been awarded "Big of the Year" by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in the lives of young people through mentoring.
Captain Peters has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2011 when he joined their Board of Directors. It was during this time that he also became a Lunch Buddy, dedicating one lunch break per week to mentoring a fifth-grade student named Nick. Despite being warned that their match may not be easy due to Nick's frequent visits to in-school suspension and lack of positive male influence in his life, Captain Peters embraced the opportunity to make a difference.
Nearly ten years later, Nick has enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves with aspirations to follow in Captain Peters' footsteps and pursue a career in law enforcement. This is a testament to the positive impact that Captain Peters has had on Nick's life.

Police Chief Paul Williams expressed his pride and appreciation for Captain Peters' leadership both within the organization and at the department. "I couldn't think of someone more deserving of this award than Tad," Chief Williams stated. "He is humble, hardworking, a great role model, and willing to put in the effort to make a difference in a young man's life."
In addition to his personal involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Captain Peters' dedication has also helped expand the organization's Bigs in Blue program within SPD. This national campaign aims to build strong relationships between youth and police officers by connecting them through mentorship.
Ashley French, Chief Executive Officer of BBBSO, emphasized the importance of this program for children who may have had negative interactions with law enforcement in their past. "If we can match that child with a police officer now, we could truly build stronger bonds between law enforcement and the families they serve," French stated.
Currently, six officers from SPD are participating in the Bigs in Blue program, thanks to Captain Peters' involvement and dedication. The Springfield Police Department is proud to have such a compassionate and dedicated leader among their ranks, making a positive impact both within the department and in the community.
