Springfield-Greene County Health (SGCHD) encourages men to grow a mustache each year as personal commitment to their own health and as a conversation starter with others.

The annual growing of facial hair is a staple of Movember, a combination of the word mustache and November. Movember uses mustaches to bring awareness of specific health issues affecting men.

"Growing a moustache is a fun way to promote men's health and spur men to talk with each other," said Joshua Boley of SGCHD's "Hey man, you good?" campaign. "Men have a tendency to put off taking care of themselves and Movember is a nice reminder to do that."

"Hey man, you good?" is a three-year grant funded awareness campaign focused on removing the stigma around men's mental health while encouraging conversation. The campaign is currently in its second year and has started working with area businesses and organizations to increase awareness. Learn more about the "Hey man, you good?" campaign.

Catch cancer early

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer for men 15-34 years old. Catching these cancers in the earlier stages can help improve the success of treatment.

Navigating work, family and health is challenging during this time. Reaching out is crucial. Especially now.

Make man time

Feelings of loneliness and isolation can increase around the holiday season. It's important to make an effort to stay connected.

What you can do:
  • Get together with friends for a game or movie night.
  • Grab a bite to eat with a friend or a group of friends.

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health! It has many benefits like reducing depression and anxiety and even small changes can help you live a longer life.

What you can do:
  • Start a workout routine. Many local gyms have trial memberships and coaches.
  • Take a walk on one of Springfield's many trails.
  • Start bicycling or begin training for a 5K or race. Even if you've never run before, you can start small, and cycling offers a variety of options including road and mountain bikes.
