~ Springfield Mayor Ken McClure expressed his condolences and gratitude for the service of local World War II hero Jack Hamlin, who passed away recently. Born in Springfield in 1921, Jack attended Central High School and later enrolled at Drury University.

After graduating, Jack pursued a career in baseball and played for the New York Yankees farm club in Joplin, Missouri. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Jack joined the Coast Guard like many other men. Despite being initially deemed unfit for service due to a childhood illness, Jack was determined to defend his country and joined the Coast Guard.

On June 6, 1944, Jack found himself crossing the English Channel as part of the D-Day invasion. His bravery and dedication to his country did not go unnoticed and he was recently honored by Mayor McClure during his State-of-the-City address in June. On that same day, the Mayor visited Jack and presented him with the prestigious Key to the City.

The passing of this local hero has left a void in Springfield's community. Mayor McClure extends his sympathies to Jack's loved ones and recognizes his contributions to our nation, state, and city.
