~ Springfield Mayor Ken McClure expressed his condolences and gratitude for the service of local World War II hero Jack Hamlin, who passed away recently. Born in Springfield in 1921, Jack attended Central High School and later enrolled at Drury University.
After graduating, Jack pursued a career in baseball and played for the New York Yankees farm club in Joplin, Missouri. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Jack joined the Coast Guard like many other men. Despite being initially deemed unfit for service due to a childhood illness, Jack was determined to defend his country and joined the Coast Guard.
