~ A tragic accident at the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill has resulted in the closure of the facility by city officials. According to reports, a city worker, identified as Larry Flett, was fatally injured on Monday morning when the articulating dump truck he was driving overturned and caught fire. The Ebeneezer Fire Department and Springfield Police quickly responded to the scene.
Flett, 62, had been employed as a solid waste operations associate at the landfill for almost two years. Prior to that, he had served as a Springfield Police Officer for nine years from 1989 to 1998. Interim City Manager Collin Quigley expressed his condolences for Flett's family and coworkers, stating that his death is a great loss for the City of Springfield. Quigley described Flett as a dedicated and loyal public servant who played an important role in their team.

The Department of Environmental Services, which oversees the landfill, will be conducting an internal review of the incident. As a result of the closure, located at 3545 W Farm Rd 34, it is expected to remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The city urges residents to use alternative waste disposal methods during this time.
