~ Construction to Begin on National and Division Intersection Improvements
Springfield, MO- The long-awaited improvements at the intersection of National Avenue and Division Street are finally set to begin. According to Public Works Project Manager Zach Butcher, construction is expected to start on Monday, Aug. 5 with multiple lane closures at the intersection.
The National and Division Intersection Improvement Project will include various upgrades such as geometric improvements, better integration of the existing railroad crossing, new traffic signals, pavement improvements, Americans with Disabilities Act compliant pedestrian facilities, as well as new sidewalk and multi-use path connections. In addition, the BNSF railroad will be completing railroad crossing improvements within the intersection while City Utilities will be improving gas, water and electric utilities.
During construction, one lane of traffic flow in each direction is expected to remain open for a majority of the duration. However, in September there will be a near full closure of the intersection for over a month due to work on the railroad crossing and its integration with the intersection. The City will provide updates on traffic impacts as scheduling information becomes available.

Butcher explains that these improvements have been in the works for several years due to the confusing layout of the intersection and use of scaffolding for traffic signals which can be confusing for motorists. The addition of a railroad crossing also adds another layer of complexity. This project aims to create a more clear, cohesive and safe intersection for all users.
The estimated cost for these improvements is $2.6 million and will be funded through a combination of sources including ¼-cent Capital Improvement and 1/8-cent Transportation sales taxes, reimbursements from City Utilities for utility improvements, as well as a $750,000 grant from Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for highway/rail crossing projects.
Construction is expected to last approximately six months with an anticipated completion date in early 2025. For more information about this project, visit springfieldmo.gov/nationaldivision.
