~ Springfield Fire Department Launches New Incident Command Unit to Enhance Emergency Management

The Springfield Fire Department (SFD) has recently announced the launch of its new incident command unit, a repurposed vehicle that will greatly enhance the city's ability to manage large-scale emergencies. This project was initiated by Fire Chief David Pennington, who recognized the need for a mobile command center in the city.

After evaluating the costs associated with purchasing a new unit, Chief Pennington explored alternative options and came across a retiring urban search and rescue (USAR) trailer. At the same time, the Springfield Police Department had removed a DWI command center vehicle from service and intended to surplus it as state funding was no longer available for DWI checkpoint operations.

The vehicle, originally valued at over $400,000 and with less than 10,000 miles on it, still had extensive service life but required repairs and upgrades. Instead of letting this valuable resource go unused, the SFD's Fleet Services division took on the task of reconditioning and refitting it to meet the operational needs of today's fire service.

The "new" incident command unit is a self-contained mobile command post that can respond to large-scale incidents. It provides command staff with critical workspace to track incident progress, monitor weather changes, conduct research, and maintain reliable communications. Additionally, it has the capability to support the department's Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) program at remote locations, making it even more versatile.

Chief Pennington expressed his satisfaction with this project, stating that it demonstrates their commitment to innovation, resource stewardship, and inter-agency collaboration. By repurposing existing assets instead of purchasing new ones, they were able to provide the City of Springfield with a modern incident command unit at a fraction of the cost.

The Springfield Fire Department is excited about deploying this asset in support of its mission to protect lives and property, while ensuring the safety and resilience of the community. This new incident command unit will undoubtedly play a crucial role in managing emergencies and keeping the city safe.
