~ Springfield Fire Department Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Rebuilt Fire Station 7

On Tuesday, July 16, the Springfield Fire Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly rebuilt Fire Station 7. Located at 2129 E. Sunshine on the boundary of the Brentwood and Oak Grove neighborhoods, the old station, built in 1958, had long exceeded its usefulness.

Thanks to funding provided by the voter-approved Level Property Tax, which generates approximately $8.5 million per year, the new station cost just over $3.5 million to build. The Level Property Tax has also funded or is currently funding various improvements and new stations throughout Springfield.

Fire Chief David Pennington expressed his gratitude to Springfield voters for their support in a statement: "We are keeping our promise to Springfield voters." He went on to explain that the new station was designed with the health and safety of firefighters in mind, featuring a "hot zone" design concept with decontamination corridors and an efficient layout focused on expedient delivery of emergency services. The hot zones are designated spaces within fire stations that may be contaminated, while cold zones are free from risk. Warm zones serve as transitional spaces between the two.

In addition to Fire Station 7, other projects funded by the Level Property Tax include improvements to Fire Station 10 at 2245 E. Galloway St., which was built in 1979 and underwent a $644,000 renovation in 2022. The newly renovated station now boasts improved kitchen, dining and living room spaces, as well as updated physical fitness areas and sleeping quarters. The laundry area was also updated to properly handle turnout gear (firefighter protective clothing).

The rebuilt Fire Station 4 at 2423 N. Delaware became operational in September of this year thanks to funding from the Level Property Tax. And earlier this year in February, the brand-new $3 million Fire Station 13, located in the 1900 block of West College in the West Central neighborhood, was placed into service.

Looking ahead, plans are in place for a brand-new Fire Station 14 at the northeast corner of West Chestnut Expressway and North Duke Avenue. Construction for this station is expected to begin as part of a 2026 bond package also made possible by the Level Property Tax.

Chief Pennington expressed his excitement for these improvements and new stations, stating, "We are ecstatic to be able to replace these old stations with modern facilities and equipment, and equally excited to build two new stations in underserved areas of Springfield, both of which have high fire risk."
