~ Springfield Fire Department Urges Residents to Check Smoke Alarms for Safety

The Springfield Fire Department (SFD) is urgently calling on all residents of the city to take immediate action and ensure that their homes are equipped with the correct number of working smoke alarms. This crucial step is necessary to protect families from potential injuries or loss of life due to fire incidents.

According to SFD, this year alone, Springfield has experienced nine significant fires, out of which five resulted in major injuries and four were fatal. Upon investigation, it was found that the lack of adequate working smoke alarms was a notable contributing factor in most of these incidents.

To prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future, SFD recommends that every residence have at least one smoke alarm per floor, located in common hallway areas, and one inside each sleeping area. This ensures that occupants are alerted quickly, regardless of where a fire starts within the home, especially when family members are asleep.

Jim Ludden, division chief of the Community Risk Reduction (CRR) division at SFD stated, "We never want to see another family suffer the devastating effects of a fire that could have been prevented by a simple, inexpensive device like a smoke alarm." He further added that their commitment to CRR goes beyond responding to emergencies and includes working proactively to keep residents safe in their homes every day.

In line with this commitment, SFD offers a free smoke alarm installation program for all residents within the city limits. The department encourages everyone to share this information with their neighbors to ensure that every member of the community is protected. Interested residents can contact SFD at 417-874-2300 or visit https://www.springfieldmo.gov/freesmokealarms to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm consultation and installation.

During these consultations, firefighters will visit homes and assess the smoke alarm needs before providing and installing them free of charge. This initiative aims to equip every household in Springfield with the necessary protection to prevent injuries and avoid the tragedy of losing a loved one to fire.

In conclusion, SFD urges all residents to take this opportunity and ensure that their homes are equipped with working smoke alarms. By doing so, they can contribute to making Springfield a safer place for everyone.
