~ Springfield, MO- The Springfield Fire Department and regional Community Risk Reduction partners held a news conference on Tuesday, January 28th at Fire Station 8 to announce a new requirement for durable medical equipment (DME) oxygen providers. As of January 1st, MoHealthNet now requires these providers to supply firesafe cannula valves to all program participants receiving oxygen services.
The cost of the firesafe cannulas will be reimbursed to the DME oxygen providers as part of the oxygen supplies, maintenance, and repair classification fee included in the reimbursement rate from MoHealthNet. In order to address the cost of these mandated devices, MoHealthNet has increased the monthly reimbursement amount to DME oxygen providers. Missouri is now the fourth state to ensure reimbursement for firesafe cannula valves and the first state to mandate their use. The U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) has required their use for all patients on home oxygen therapy since 2018.
This decision by MoHealthNet is a result of collaborative efforts by the Springfield Fire Department in partnership with the Battlefield Fire Protection District, Missouri Division of Fire Safety, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), and members of the Missouri House of Representatives.
