~ Springfield, MO- The City of Springfield and its project partners held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, March 14 at the Missouri State University Brick City Galleries for the Renew Jordan Creek Phase I project. The event was attended by over 125 people who gathered to learn more about the project and hear from project partners and granting agencies about their involvement in making this long-term effort a reality.
Renew Jordan Creek is a transformative project aimed at restoring the historic Jordan Creek as it flows through downtown Springfield. The project has multiple goals including flood reduction, water quality improvements, pedestrian and connectivity enhancements, integration of sustainable greenspaces, comfort and safety improvements, and development of a sense of place. The community-developed Jordan Creek Masterplan also envisions future improvements at Founders Park and the City-owned property at 404 N. Jefferson Avenue.
During the ceremony, Mayor Ken McClure emphasized that the daylighting of Jordan Creek is not just about uncovering a waterway but also about reconnecting the community with its natural heritage, reducing flood risks, and enhancing the quality of life for residents, workers, and visitors in downtown Springfield.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be around $33 million. Funding for phase I will come from various local sources as well as outside grants. Local funding will be provided by the City's Level Property Tax, ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax, and Environmental Services Green Infrastructure and Clean Water funds. External funding sources include Local ARPA funds, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ARPA funds, a Department of Economic Development ARPA grant, Environmental Protection Agency and DNR grants as well as Clean Water State Revolving Fund (SRF) program assistance.
Kirkland Preston, Public Works Project Manager expressed excitement about celebrating the beginning of construction and the progress made so far in daylighting Jordan Creek in downtown Springfield. He also mentioned that all parties involved are working diligently to see this transformation take shape.
