~ Springfield Environmental Services is taking a proactive approach to reducing waste and extending the lifespan of the city's landfill. The organization is inviting residents to join in their efforts this fall by participating in two events aimed at keeping usable items out of the landfill.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, households across Springfield are encouraged to take part in the City-Wide Garage Sale. This coordinated day of buying, selling, and rehoming goods will make it easy for residents to pass along items that still have life left in them. Sellers can register their sale on the official interactive map found on CleanGreenSGF.com, making it convenient for shoppers to find treasures throughout the city.

The following Saturday, Oct. 4, residents can bring their usable or recyclable items to the Reuse Rally at Hammons Field parking lot located at 946 E Trafficway Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will feature participating vendors and non-profits who will accept a wide range of donations for reuse or recycling including tires, toys and bikes, electronics, clothing, metal, and other items listed on CleanGreenSGF.com.

Ashley Krug, Market Development Coordinator for Environmental Services stated, "We want to make it easy for residents to pass along items that still have life left in them, whether that's through selling, donating or recycling." She added that this effort is all part of an initiative to extend the lifespan of both materials and the community's landfill.

Residents can participate in these events in several ways. They can register their sale on CleanGreenSGF.com to be included on the citywide map or browse the interactive map to plan their route when shopping. When visiting sales, they are asked to be courteous by not blocking driveways or mailboxes.

For those who prefer not to sell or shop but still want to contribute, they can bring their items directly to the Hammons Field parking lot on Oct. 4. However, transportation of items will not be provided. Additionally, those interested in volunteering can sign up on CleanGreenSGF.com by Oct. 1 to be a part of the Reuse Rally team. Volunteers will assist with greeting attendees, directing traffic, and unloading donations and will receive a free t-shirt and meal for their efforts.

For more information on the events, including maps and a list of accepted items, residents can visit CleanGreenSGF.com. By participating in these events, residents can help reduce waste and make a positive impact on the environment while also finding new homes for their usable items.
