Springfield, Mo. ~ On Nov. 14, 2023, the Springfield Police Department responded to a report of gunshots being fired from one vehicle at another near the intersection of Grant Avenue and College Street. When officers arrived, they located 26-year-old Chaviz Nguyen from Springfield and a female victim with gunshot wounds. The female was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while medical personnel performed lifesaving efforts on Nguyen, but he died at the scene.
The suspect vehicle fled the scene immediately following the shooting and has not been located until Nov. 15 when the Springfield Homicide Unit identified Elysha Bedell, a 19-year-old male from Springfield, and two juveniles as suspects in the homicide of Nguyen. On Nov. 16, Bedell was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail while the two juveniles were arrested and booked into the Greene County Juvenile Detention Center. The cases against them were presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office and Juvenile Office respectively for charges to be filed.

Bedell was charged with 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2 counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and 4 counts of Armed Criminal Action with no bond. The Greene County Prosecutor's Office cautions that these charges are merely allegations and that Bedell is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
This is Springfield's 17th homicide investigation in 2023 and detectives continue to investigate this incident asking anyone with additional information to contact the Springfield Police Department or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers.
