~ The Springfield Westside Optimist Club has announced that the application deadline for the Junior Police & Fire Academy has been extended to June 10, 2019. This daylong academy, now in its fifth year, is a joint effort between the Springfield Police Department, the Springfield Fire Department, and the Optimist Club to educate youth aged 10 to 13 about the roles and responsibilities of police officers and firefighters.
The academy will take place on Saturday, June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Springfield Regional Police and Fire Training Center located at 2620 W. Battlefield Rd. Participants will have the opportunity to attend classes on becoming a police officer and a firefighter, as well as engage in hands-on activities such as responding to calls for service, touring Special Response Team equipment, witnessing a K-9 demonstration, learning about search and rescue techniques, and spraying a fire hose. The day will conclude with a graduation ceremony where certificates and medals will be awarded to all participants.
