~ The Springfield Westside Optimist Club has announced that the application deadline for the Junior Police & Fire Academy has been extended to June 10, 2019. This daylong academy, now in its fifth year, is a joint effort between the Springfield Police Department, the Springfield Fire Department, and the Optimist Club to educate youth aged 10 to 13 about the roles and responsibilities of police officers and firefighters.

The academy will take place on Saturday, June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Springfield Regional Police and Fire Training Center located at 2620 W. Battlefield Rd. Participants will have the opportunity to attend classes on becoming a police officer and a firefighter, as well as engage in hands-on activities such as responding to calls for service, touring Special Response Team equipment, witnessing a K-9 demonstration, learning about search and rescue techniques, and spraying a fire hose. The day will conclude with a graduation ceremony where certificates and medals will be awarded to all participants.

Thanks to the support of local businesses such as Don Wessel Honda, Incredible Pizza, Walmart, Trifecta Restoration, ActNow promotions for providing shirts and BJ's Trophy Shop for supplying medals, this event is made possible. The Optimist Club has been serving children in Springfield and the Ozarks since 1958 with their mission of "Bringing out the Best in Kids." Through various programs and activities, they aim to support young people in developing optimism which builds character and self-confidence.

Aaron Lesure of the Springfield West Side Optimist Club expressed his excitement about partnering with both departments for this event. He stated that over the past three years it has been a great success and they are thrilled to offer this experience to local youth. Lesure believes that this program will provide valuable exposure into what it truly means to be a police officer or firefighter by allowing participants to work alongside these professionals.

Police Chief Paul Williams also shared his enthusiasm for the academy, stating that it offers a unique opportunity to connect with the youth of the community and answer any questions they may have about law enforcement. He hopes that this experience will not only be educational but also spark an interest in becoming a future police recruit.

Fire Chief David Pennington echoed Williams' sentiments, expressing gratitude for the chance to positively influence the lives of these young participants and provide them with a firsthand experience of what it takes to be a firefighter.

The extended application deadline provides more time for interested youth to apply and take part in this exciting and informative event. With only 25 spots available, interested individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The Junior Police & Fire Academy is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn about these important professions and gain valuable insight into their daily duties.
