KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 7, 2024 ~ On May 22, Scrap Management Industries (SMI) celebrated the grand opening of its new corporate headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The event was attended by government officials, recycling industry experts, and members of the community.
Founded in 1973 by Kenny and Sherrie Burgess, SMI has become a leader in sustainable and ethical recycling practices. The company's 51-year history was commemorated at the event with a mural depicting its humble beginnings.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Jackson County legislator Donna Peyton presented a proclamation on behalf of County Executive Frank White Jr., declaring May 22 as Scrap Management Industries Day. The proclamation recognized SMI's commitment to a sustainable future and the Burgess Family Foundation's generosity towards local charities.
Jerrit Burgess, SMI's president and CEO, spoke about the company's mission during his speech at the event. "The opening of our new headquarters symbolizes our growth and commitment to innovation in the recycling industry," he said. "This facility not only represents our success but also serves as a promise of our ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and community development."

In addition to celebrating their 50th anniversary, SMI also took the opportunity to give back to their community. Chasitie Burgess Walden, SMI's legal counsel, presented checks to four local organizations: KC Common Good, AskSammie, Kitty Cat Connection, and Fix'em KC. "We are honored to champion these hard-working charities that make a significant impact in our community," said Walden.
Keith Rhodes, SMI's chief financial officer, reflected on what 50 years of Scrap Management Industries means. "It represents decades of hard work, innovation and a steadfast commitment to our community and the environment," he said. "To our incredible team, partners and growing community - thank you for your unwavering dedication and support. Together we have built something truly remarkable."
The new SMI headquarters, located in the historic East Crossroads district of downtown Kansas City, features a lobby mural showcasing the company's history. Attendees at the event were given a tour of the new offices.
