(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia Water Utility has announced that they will be conducting unidirectional flushing of the water distribution system in west Columbia starting on Monday, April 21. This project will target Area 6, which is located west of Stadium Boulevard between Interstate 70 and Broadway.
According to the Utility, crews will be working between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and expect the project to take approximately two weeks to complete. Unidirectional flushing involves forcing water through the pipes at a high velocity in order to remove mineral deposits from the interior surface of the water mains.

Customers in the affected area may notice cloudiness or discoloration in their water during this time. The sediment causing this is calcium bicarbonate, commonly known as lime, which is used as a water softener. The City assures that it is not harmful to consume and poses no health hazard. However, if discoloration persists for more than a few hours, customers are encouraged to report their concerns by calling 573.874.CITY (2489) so that Water Utility staff can address any issues promptly.
Residents are advised to be aware of this project and its potential effects on their water supply during the next two weeks.
