(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia's Public Works Street division has announced that they will be installing speed humps on three streets in the city starting Monday, Aug. 12. The targeted streets include Highridge Drive, Ridgemont, and Hulen Drive, which have been identified by traffic studies as having vehicles operating at higher than desirable speeds.
The installation process will begin on Highridge Drive and once completed, crews will move on to Ridgemont and finish with Hulen Drive. In addition to these new installations, the deteriorated speed humps on Kunlun Drive and Berrywood Drive will also be replaced. The asphalt from these old speed humps was removed on Aug. 8.
According to officials, the goal of these speed hump installations is to reduce speeds and create safer streets for residents. The entire process is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. However, if there are any delays due to weather or other factors, work will continue the following week starting Aug. 19.

While full street closures will not be necessary during the installation process, drivers should expect some delays as single lane closures may occur. Motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes when possible and signs and flaggers will be present to assist with navigating through active work zones.
Detailed traffic calming plans showing the specific locations of the speed humps can be found attached to this press release.
This recent announcement comes after previous installations of speed humps on Hanover Boulevard, Garden Drive, and Spencer Avenue from Aug. 5-7. For more information on these installations, photos can be found in the attached pictures and a press release from Aug. 2 can be viewed at CoMo.gov/CMS/pressreleases/view.php?id=8880.
The Public Works department aims to provide traffic calming solutions such as speed humps in order to influence driver behavior and create safer neighborhood streets. They work closely with residents to address their concerns, conduct necessary studies, and develop strategies to reduce traffic speeds and collisions. It is their goal to address as many issues as possible each year. More information on their traffic calming policies can be found at CoMo.gov/public-works/street-division/traffic-management/neighborhood-traffic-management/.
