(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Police responded to a shooting on May 18th at approximately 12:40 p.m. in the 500 block of East Nifong Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found two victims with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital, where one of the victims, identified as Derek Gonzalez, 32, of Columbia, later succumbed to his injuries. His next of kin has been notified.
The second victim is currently in stable condition. Detectives and crime scene investigators were called to the scene and conducted interviews with those involved. The individual who was initially detained by police has since been released without charges.
