(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Police responded to an armed robbery call on the morning of February 14th near North Fifth Street and Broadway. According to reports, the suspect brandished a firearm and threatened bank employees before making off with an undisclosed amount of money.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers quickly secured the area and gathered a description of the suspect as well as their initial direction of travel. Utilizing private downtown businesses and Flock cameras, detectives were able to track down the suspect.
The individual was identified as 71-year-old Basil Kyles, a resident of Columbia. At approximately 3:45 p.m., Kyles was taken into custody near Sexton and Garth Avenue. He has since been charged with robbery in the first-degree, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence in a felony prosecution.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652. A cash reward of up to $2,500 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
The case number for this incident is 2026-001359 and it falls under several Missouri statutes including robbery in the first-degree (570.020), armed criminal action (571.015), unlawful use of weapons (571.030), unlawful possession of a firearm (571.070), and tampering with evidence in a felony prosecution (575.100).
