(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Parks and Recreation staff have announced the temporary closure of the Lakeside Dog Park at Twin Lakes Recreation Area, along with all park and trail restrooms, due to the forecast of extremely cold temperatures over the next several days. The closures will go into effect today, January 17th, and signage will be posted to notify park and trail users.
The decision to close the Lakeside Dog Park was made in order to ensure the safety of dogs from potentially falling through lake ice. However, dog owners can still utilize the Off-Season Dog Park at Twin Lakes during this time.

According to Parks and Recreation officials, the extreme cold temperatures pose a threat to the functionality of heated restrooms that are normally open throughout the winter. The heaters are not able to adequately warm these facilities in such low temperatures, which could result in frozen and shattered plumbing, valves, and fixtures. This could lead to costly repairs amounting to thousands of dollars.
In order to prevent these potential damages, park staff will be taking precautionary measures such as adding non-toxic antifreeze to sinks and toilets. As a result, these facilities must remain closed until temperatures return to seasonal averages. Once this occurs, restrooms are expected to reopen for public use.
For more information on these closures or any other inquiries regarding Parks and Recreation services, individuals can contact them at 573.874.7460.
