Just 50 minutes later, at 4:57 p.m., CFD received another call for a residential fire in the 1100 block of Elleta Boulevard. The first crew arrived within three minutes to find heavy flames showing from a duplex. Despite the concurrent timing with the previous structure fire, crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames within 15 minutes and contain the damage to the building of origin.
According to fire marshals, this second fire was determined to be accidental and caused by an unattended grill. Eleven Columbia Fire companies responded to this incident.
Despite facing challenges posed by severe weather and high call volume, CFD firefighters responded swiftly and effectively in both cases. Their quick actions prevented further damage to neighboring buildings and there were no reported injuries at either fire.
The Columbia Fire Department is commended for their dedication and professionalism in protecting lives and property during these emergencies.
