(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ On Friday, March 14, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) answered a statewide call for assistance from the Rolla Fire Department. The request was made through the state's mobilization plan as a result of a devastating tornado that hit the area.

At 9:30 p.m., Columbia Engine 2 and Assistant Chief Lester Shewmake were deployed to Rolla to provide support and aid in the aftermath of the disaster. Along with other firefighters from neighboring regions, they conducted extensive searches on foot in neighborhoods that had been severely damaged by the tornado.

Despite facing challenging conditions such as rubble, downed trees, and debris, the CFD team worked tirelessly to locate any missing or injured community members. After completing their initial searches, they were released by Rolla's command team at 1 a.m. and safely returned to Columbia at 3 a.m. on March 15.

The CFD's swift response and dedication to helping their fellow firefighters and community members in need is commendable. Their efforts are a true testament to their bravery and commitment to serving others in times of crisis.
