Deputy Chief John Ambra of the Columbia Fire Department commended the efforts of both residents and firefighters in minimizing damage and preventing any injuries. He also reminded residents to exercise caution when approaching hazards like this.

After conducting an investigation, Columbia fire marshals determined that improperly discarded smoking materials were the cause of the fire. In light of this incident, the Columbia Fire Department is reminding residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes.

According to Deputy Chief Ambra, smoke alarms can save lives and should be placed on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas. It is also recommended to check smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and change batteries at least twice per year when adjusting clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Smoke alarms over 10 years old should be replaced.

Thanks to quick action from both neighbors and firefighters, this incident was contained with minimal damage and no injuries. The Columbia Fire Department urges all residents to take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in their homes.
