(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to a residential structure fire on Wednesday evening, July 8 at 7:31 p.m. The incident occurred in the 2400 block of Northhampton Drive.

Upon arrival, CFD companies found flames coming from the rear side of a two-story duplex with a walkout basement. The firefighters acted quickly and deployed a hose line to contain the fire and protect the neighboring home. At the same time, they searched the structure for any potential victims. Within six minutes of their arrival, the situation was under control.

Fortunately, all occupants of the structure had already evacuated before CFD arrived. Firefighters conducted thorough searches to ensure there were no victims inside. They also worked to confirm that there was no fire extension within the interior of the building.

A total of seven fire companies, two battalion chiefs, and one safety captain with 24 personnel responded to the scene. The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion conducted an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire and determined it to be accidental. It was caused by a propane grill located on an exterior balcony.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in this incident. CFD reminds residents to always use caution when operating grills or other outdoor equipment to prevent accidents like this from occurring.
