The fire crews remained on site for several hours to assist with investigations and ensure that there were no hidden areas of fire remaining. The Columbia fire marshals are currently conducting an origin and cause investigation.
In light of this incident, the Columbia Fire Department would like to remind residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. These devices can save lives and should be placed on every level of your home, including outside sleeping areas. It is recommended to check smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and replace batteries at least twice a year when adjusting clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Smoke alarms over 10 years old should also be replaced.
