(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Gas Leak in Residential Area
On Tuesday morning, the Columbia Fire Department was called to the 1000 block of Jefferson Street for reports of a gas leak. The call came in at 9:43 a.m. and the first company arrived on the scene within seven minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a hit gas line in a residential area with a confirmed leak. As a precautionary measure, approximately three city blocks were evacuated. Nine residents and two pets were safely staged nearby with the help of a Go COMO bus, providing temporary shelter during the evacuation. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The gas line was crimped and shut off by Ameren personnel at around 10:58 a.m. They remained on site to secure the area and ensure that there were no remaining leaks.
Five units from the Columbia Fire Department, consisting of eight personnel, responded to the incident. The department would like to remind residents to take immediate precautions in case of a gas leak. This includes extinguishing all smoking materials and open flames, refraining from operating appliances that could ignite the gas, and evacuating the area immediately while ensuring others do so as well.
Residents are advised not to return to the area until it has been inspected and cleared by emergency responders or qualified personnel. In case of a gas leak, it is important to report it to your gas provider and call 911 for assistance. Safety should always be the top priority in such situations.
