(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Performs Successful Technical Rescue

This morning, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to a call for a fall injury in the 300 block of Parkwood Court. The patient had sustained a mechanical impalement to the leg by a piece of reinforcing bar, commonly used in concrete construction.

The first responding fire company arrived within seven minutes and quickly assessed the situation. Due to the complexity of the rescue, additional resources were requested. A CFD ladder truck, equipped for technical rescue operations, was dispatched to the scene.

Under the direction of Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, crews worked diligently to stabilize the patient and used specialized tools to cut and remove a portion of the metal and railroad ties while keeping the leg in place to prevent further injury. Throughout the trauma, firefighters and paramedics provided care including pain control and hemodynamic stabilization.

Thanks to their quick response and specialized equipment, CFD was able to safely transport the patient to a local hospital with the portion of reinforced bar still intact. A total of nine firefighters responded to this incident.

This successful rescue is another demonstration of CFD's decision to enhance rescue capabilities across the city. In the past, technical rescues like this relied on a single heavy rescue squad vehicle. However, today 3 CFD ladder trucks are outfitted with heavy rescue equipment and trained specialists, allowing for faster and more effective responses citywide.

Chief Schaeffer expressed his satisfaction with how this incident was handled, stating "This is exactly the type of call we envisioned when we made the strategic decision to distribute heavy rescue capabilities." He also emphasized how crucial it is for fire departments to have access to specialized tools and equipment in order to provide efficient and effective services during emergencies.
