(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Hazardous Material Incident in Callaway County
On Wednesday evening, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) was called to assist with a hazardous material situation in Callaway County. At 8:04 p.m., CFD units were dispatched to a request for mutual aid from the county's fire department for their Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team.
Upon arrival, CFD companies were met with reports from homeowners who had discovered a wet substance on the outside of their grocery bags. The substance had caused skin irritation and even melted material on a coat. Additionally, a cleaning agent used to wipe a counter had reacted with the substance, resulting in discoloration of the countertop.
The CFD firefighters, who are also certified HazMat technicians, quickly collected a sample from the cargo area of the vehicle that transported the grocery bags. After testing, it was determined that the substance was a 25% sulfuric acid solution. The team then proceeded to decontaminate the cargo mat and affected areas of the vehicle.

The hazardous bags and coat were properly disposed of by Callaway County officials. The homeowners were evaluated on scene by medical personnel but declined any further care or transportation.
The cause and origin of the hazardous material is currently under investigation by Callaway County authorities. In response to this incident, CFD had two units and a battalion chief with six personnel on scene, including four certified HazMat technicians. All units returned to service within two hours.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of having trained HazMat technicians available to respond to such situations promptly and effectively.
