(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - After facing delays, the start date for the new phase of construction on the roundabout at West Route K and West Old Plank Road has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12. The City of Columbia Public Works department has hired Sam Gaines Construction as the contractor for this project.
Phase three of construction will focus on building the west leg of the roundabout near the former Leatherwood Hills Gas Station and Vermillion Drive. As a result, West Route K will be closed west of the intersection with West Old Plank Road. This means that drivers will no longer be able to use West Old Plank Road to head west on Route K. However, they will still be able to use the portion of the roundabout that has already been completed to turn left and head east on Route K.

To accommodate this closure, traffic on West Route K heading east towards Columbia will be detoured north on South Sinclair Road to West Southampton Drive. Similarly, traffic heading west from Columbia should use East Southampton Drive and South Sinclair Road to reach West Route K. The detour is expected to remain in place for approximately four weeks, with an anticipated end date of 5 p.m., Dec. 5, weather permitting.
It should be noted that a previous press release had stated that phase two was expected to end in early October. However, due to construction-related delays, completion has been pushed back to Nov. 12. Despite this setback, overall project completion is still expected by early winter, weather permitting.
Drivers are reminded to exercise caution while driving through work zones and follow posted detours and signage. It is important to watch out for construction workers and equipment in these areas as well. Slowing down and staying alert not only protects those working on site but also fellow drivers on the road.
