(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - In an effort to combat the opioid crisis, several 24/7 naloxone distribution boxes have been installed at various locations in Boone County. These boxes, which resemble newspaper stands, are free for anyone to access and contain naloxone, a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

The boxes will be refilled on a weekly or as-needed basis and are located at four Boone County Fire Protection District stations: Station 2 in Rocheport, Station 4 in Harrisburg, Station 6 in Sturgeon, and Station 15 in Columbia. This initiative is part of a larger project funded by contract 5H79TI086392-03 between Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

To educate community members on how to use naloxone, monthly SAVE-A-LIFE Naloxone Education and Distribution events will be held. The next event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26 from 12-1 p.m. at The Blue Note in Columbia.

This effort aims to increase access to naloxone and save lives in the event of an overdose. With these distribution boxes now available throughout Boone County, individuals can easily obtain this life-saving medication when needed.
