(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As winter weather continues to affect the city, the City of Columbia is taking necessary precautions and closely monitoring the situation. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory that will remain in effect until 6 p.m.
To keep residents informed, updates will be regularly posted on the City's social media accounts and on CoMo.gov. The City of Columbia Public Works department, led by John Ogan, has deployed a 22-person snowplow crew to clear roads and ensure safe travel for residents. The crew began their shift at 7 a.m. on Friday, January 10th, taking over from the overnight team that had been working to respond to the winter weather conditions. The focus of the crew will be on keeping first, second, and third priority routes passable.
In light of the ongoing winter weather event, officials are urging residents to avoid any non-essential travel. For those who must venture out on the roads, it is important to take necessary precautions such as reducing speeds, increasing stopping distances, avoiding sudden braking or acceleration, and maintaining safe following distances.

The Go COMO Transit fixed-route bus service is making every effort to operate as scheduled on Friday. Riders are encouraged to use the ETA SPOT app to track their bus in real-time and receive service updates. Notifications will also be shared through Alerts.CoMo.gov via text message, email or voice call. However, paratransit services will operate on a case-by-case basis and customers may be contacted directly if there are any issues accessing their homes due to weather conditions.
Unfortunately, due to inclement weather conditions, CMSE van service has been canceled for Friday morning.
The City of Columbia Utilities department is also working diligently during this time. Solid Waste is running curbside refuse and recycling routes as scheduled on Friday; however crews will only collect as much as weather and conditions permit. For those whose Monday curbside refuse routes were impacted by the weather, collection will take place on Saturday, January 11th. Recycling will not be collected.

To ensure efficient trash collection and snow removal, residents are reminded to follow guidelines for roll cart placement during winter weather, which can be found on CoMo.gov.
The City's Public Health department, led by Austin Krohn, is also taking necessary precautions during this time. Several warming centers and shelters plan to remain open regardless of weather conditions; however, it is recommended to check with the location before going due to changing conditions. Road conditions may also impact Animal Control response times and residents are advised to hold onto loose dogs until Animal Control can safely arrive.
As the City of Columbia continues to monitor and respond to winter weather conditions, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions for their safety.
